Chamonix

From Annecy to Chamonix the mountains started unfolding. In Chamonix we unofficially decided that it was going to be Daniel’s birthday. Because of this we stayed in a LOVELY hotel, with wood everywhere and lots of cupboards and a balcony that looked out to Mont Blanc

This being the Alps we decided to have the specialty of raclette for Daniel’s birthday dinner. We asked the hotel for a recommendation, and were pointed to a place that “has very good cheese”. The restaurant was extremely cute, with cuckoo clocks and dozens of copper pots hanging from the rafter beams, stuffed animal heads etc etc. When we sat down the waiters brought out a raclette for the people next to us and I looked at Daniel, horrified. They had half a block of cheese for the two of them! Then we thought “what the hell”, and ordered our own. I will tell the story in pictures:

The beginning when we were fresh and hungry.

Arrrggghhhhhhhh! Half a block of cheese!!

The cheese gets grilled until it is bubbling and crispy, at which point you slide all the melted goodness off, onto your potatoes and cured pork and gherkins. Then you eat and wait for the cheese to go gooey again.

Melted crispy goodness

The cheese is rather rich and after about 4 slices for me I started feeling slightly ill, so I had to halt. Daniel didn’t last much longer. Then we sat and looked at the cheese and compared it with the people next to us, who seemed to manage more, and even had dessert afterwards. Daniel was a bit disappointed in his staying power. After we waddled home he remarked that he doesn’t feel the need to eat raclette ever again.

The end when we both felt a little disgusting:

Beaten by the cheese! :o(
