Midsommar!!!!!

Midsummer is a big deal here! Something I sort 0f realised on the day of. I was asked what I was doing for midsummer and said "hmm, dunno, maybe the museum" and received some shocked looks and was told that you don't go to the museum on midsummer. What you do on midsummer is go to a park to see a big pole get erected, which children and their parents then dance around singing songs, like: little frogs with no ears or tails.... and you eat new potatoes and marinated herring, and drink schnapps. Then you carry on eating and drinking well into the night and possibly into the next day. Oooh, but the best part is possibly the strawberry cake, which is a very important part of midsummer.

Ta da!!

If I was Homer I would be drooling at the sight of this photo. This was such an amazing cake I quite happily forgot I was insanely tired and it was WELL too late to be eating cake, and ate some cake...and then some more.
Check out the number of glasses on the table though. That was for two people.

Pole is up and dancing is around

Cute small swedish person. The flowers headdress thingy is another midsommar thaing

The pole is apparantly something that can be traced back to the vikings. It symbolises fertility, i.e. it is a giant penis. I asked what the hoops represent and was told those are the BALLS. Hahahahaha. Not sure if that is correct but it is rather funny

After being very dubious about trying marinated herring, I did actually try some. I should point out that I have been told MANY times about this extra stinky fermented herring stuff which is banned from being eaten in some apartments cos it STINKS, and I was sort of expecting this with the marinated herring. I was wrong. Actually marinated herring doesn't taste like fish at all, and I could finish off the can with no issues at all. Assimilated into Swedish culture ja!!!!
